Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
